We are pleased to announce ‘Volodarsk, Russia’, 2016, by photographer, Olya Ivanova, will be exhibited at The Light House Media Centre 6-27 October 2017.

Habitat

There are more than 1000 cities in Russia, 319 of them are industrial towns called “monocities”. They were built around the main plant to support its work, but now they are in poor condition. Some monocities appeared in the XVIII century in the Russian Empire, while others were created for the realization of the Grand plans of the Soviet Union.

This project is about how public places of industry towns specific for post-soviet space become private, habitable. Poor reality of industry cities need to be masked and gives rise to the strangest visual combinations. The Soviet architecture left a lot of the same model of schools, sport halls, cultural clubs, hospitals and libraries around the country. Now, in an attempt to turn public areas into human ones, people use all their imagination and creativity. My research is about superiority, private above public, creativity above faceless, human above state.
